What is Landscape Photography?

Is this landscape photography?

Landscape photography has captivated beginners and enthusiasts alike with its ability to capture the beauty of the natural world. In recent years, a new wave of artistic expression has emerged within this genre - contemporary landscape photography. If you're a beginner looking to explore this exciting realm, this blog post will serve as your guide to understanding what contemporary landscape photography is all about and how you can begin your journey in this captivating art form. There is no better time to enter this exciting world despite the competition being higher than ever with a plethora or high-quality images seemingly everywhere. How then can you stand out?

Embracing Diversity:

Contemporary landscape photography breaks away from the traditional norms and welcomes a wide range of styles and approaches. As a beginner, this means you have the freedom to experiment, try different techniques, and develop your unique vision. Don't limit yourself to postcard-perfect scenes; explore lesser-known locations, play with composition, and seek alternative perspectives to capture the essence of a place in your own distinct way. I love this shot of Lindis Pass as it is being shown in the opposite direction of what is usually taken. Whilst not completely earth shattering turning the camera 180 degrees, it highlights that it pays to experiment.

Storytelling through Landscapes:

Contemporary landscape photographers go beyond capturing pretty pictures; they tell stories through their images. As a beginner, consider the narrative you want to convey with your photographs. Think about the emotions you want to evoke in your viewers and the deeper connection you want to establish between them and the natural world. Look for elements within the landscape that can contribute to a compelling story and let your creativity guide you in capturing it. This is true in most industries, but even more so in photography, the narrative is important and having a story to tell will always enhance your imagery.

Environmental Awareness:

Contemporary landscape photography often intersects with environmental consciousness. It offers an opportunity to raise awareness about the fragility of our ecosystems and the importance of conservation. As a beginner, you can use your photography to document both the pristine beauty of landscapes and the impact of human activity. By sharing these images, you can inspire others to appreciate and protect our natural world. One of my favourite scenes to shoot is the juxtaposition of extremes be it weather, flat/raised or some other combination. Finding those images which combine opposite or opposing elements enhances the narrative and makes your work more compelling.

Fusion of Traditional and Modern Techniques:

While you may be starting out with basic equipment, contemporary landscape photography incorporates traditional techniques with modern technology. As a beginner, familiarise yourself with your camera's settings and experiment with different exposure techniques. Learn how to make the most of natural light and explore post-processing tools to enhance the details, colors, and textures in your photographs. With practice, you'll develop your own style and a mastery of these techniques. Don’t be afraid to try shooting film or other genres.

Experimentation and Innovation:

Contemporary landscape photography thrives on experimentation and innovation. As a beginner, don't be afraid to push the boundaries of your creativity. Try new techniques such as long-exposure, abstract compositions, or using different lenses to capture unique perspectives. Embrace digital editing tools to enhance your images or even incorporate mixed media elements. Remember, it's through experimentation that you'll discover your own voice and develop a signature style.

Connection and Engagement:

Building connections and engaging with other photographers and enthusiasts is an essential part of your journey in contemporary landscape photography. Seek out online communities, join photography forums, or participate in local photography clubs to share your work, learn from others, and receive constructive feedback. Social media platforms can also provide avenues to showcase your work and connect with a broader audience. Engage in discussions, learn from experienced photographers, and find inspiration in the vibrant landscape photography community.

Contemporary landscape photography offers a world of exploration and artistic expression for beginners. Embrace the diversity, storytelling, and environmental consciousness that this genre embodies. Experiment with techniques, challenge traditional norms, and develop your own unique style. Engage with the photography community, both online and offline, to learn, share, and grow as a photographer. Remember, your journey in contemporary landscape photography is an exciting one, filled with opportunities to capture the beauty of the natural world while making a meaningful impact. So, grab your camera and embark on this remarkable adventure
