It’s easy to forget how diverse our world is let alone how rich small biomes can be. Being able to wake up early enough to snap this image of course meant a camp out on the alpine lakeside under a rock bivy. It is one of the rare occasions I have sought out this location outside of the snowy period as is normally my preference. The reason for this is that the rock formations and textures need to be showcased and not covered with snow.

Crisp, cold air and first light. It doesn’t get any better for me. I wait all year to photograph in winter when the sun is low and casts a dispersed light and am always lucky when I have some snow to shoot as well. For snow to fall, all of the elements need to line up. It makes sense that nature’s finest treats require a lot of parts to line up and it is only when this occurs that we are treated to what is increasingly becoming a rare occurrence in a warming world. I hope that one day these pictures don’t have the same impact as seeing extinct animals or cultures in historical photos,

Sitting atop Lake Ohau, these majestic mountains tower above the basin below, dwarfed only by their proximity to the country’s highest mountain, Aoraki. It was both humbling and inspiring to experience this perspective. Sometimes the best views, though, are the elements in front of you. The glacial formations and colours against a dark blue sky formed the perfect backdrop for this image.
